Recommendation:
1.
It
was suggested that the programme should be repeated
every term in order to keep the pupils revising their lessons learnt in Science
and Mathematics.
2.
It
was also suggested that, prior to the first mock examination, the JHS three(3)
pupils should be made to write examination in
Integrated Science, Mathematics and English Language subjects at
designated centres close to them, under effective
invigilation, so as to expose them for writing examinations outside their
school premises before the B.E.C.E. This
will go a long way to reduce stress in them during the BECE.

INTRODUCTION
OF CHAIRPERSON AND FACILITATORS
The
regional secretary for MAG, Mr. Ebenezer Abraham introduced the chairperson,
Mrs. Juliana Owusu Ansah,
the headmistress of Ghana National College, Cape Coast and the facilitators
among which were Mr. Charles Acquah, Mr. Alex Asare Inkoom, Richard Arthur Payne,
Mr. John Kofi Sam and Mr. Samuel Agbornu.
WELCOME
ADDRESS
The
chairperson, Mrs. Juliana Owusu Ansah
welcomed the facilitators and the participants to the workshop. She expressed
her joy for hosting the workshop. She stated that Mathematics was being taught
theoretically instead of adopting a practical approach to teach the
subject. She emphasized, “Teaching
Mathematics in abstract is one of the factors contributing to the poor
performance of the students in the subject”. She, therefore, encouraged the
participants to take the workshop seriously and adopt a practical approach in
teaching Mathematics to remove the mystery around it.
WASSCE
2014 MATHEMATICS RESULT ANALYSIS
The
STMIE Regional Coordinator, Mr. Richard Arthur Payne, told the participants
that the performance of students in WASSCE 2014 Core Mathematics was generally
not good. He said out of 16,268 students, from 43 schools which submitted their
results to him, 4,429 students had between A1 -
C6, representing 27.197% and 11,567 students had between D7 – F9 representing 71.08%. The rest were
absent.
WORKSHOP
Mr.
Alex Asare Inkoom took the
participants through a practical approach to teach Mathematics. He said,”
Mathematics is made of concepts, generalization and skills”. He demonstrated
how to teach an area and a circumference of a circle, using a practical
approach. He advised the participants not to teach concepts using definitions,
but rather examples and guide the students to deduce relations or
generalizations from the concepts.
The
participants were later grouped into two:
·
SHS
Mathematics Teachers
·
JHS
Mathematics Teachers
JHS
MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ GROUP
1.
Mr. John Kofi Sam of Adisadel College took the
participants through how best they could help teach Mathematics. He said the
teachers should:
·
give themselves
challenges and work towards them.
·
draw scheme of work
vis-à-vis past questions.
·
break down the scheme
of work.
·
work as a team and
in cooperation.
He
guided the participants to form and solve equations from word problems.
2.
Mr. Charles Acquah, supported by Mr. Samuel Agbornu, took the participants through marking BECE
Mathematics scripts.
RECOMMENDATION
Only
thirteen (13) out of over sixty –eight (68) Mathematics teachers benefitted
from the workshop from Gomoa East District. It is
therefore recommended that a similar workshop is organised
in the District. A chief examiner may be invited to brief the teachers about
WAEC expectation as far as Mathematics and Integrated Science are concerned.

PRE-DELIVERY DISCUSSION
Science teachers
from the various schools in each circuit were welcomed. The rationale for the
choice of the topic and what was expected of each teacher were discussed.
Demonstration lesson type of INSET was agreed upon and the demonstrator
introduced.
DELIVERY
Demonstration
lesson was presented by the Science Coordinator in each of the circuits and
other science teachers observed.
Below are some
of pictures taken during the lesson presentation:
POST-DELIVERY
DISCUSSION
Some of the
strengths and weaknesses of the lesson discussed are as follows:
Strengths
i. The introduction
of the lesson was good. Thus, the RPK was properly linked to the introduction
of the lesson.
ii. Pupils became
interested in the lesson as it was introduced.
iii. The TLMs were
appropriately and effectively used
iv. Pupils actively
participated in the lesson. Thus, the lesson was child-centered and made
practical.
v. The lesson was
presented systematically
vi. There was
excellent use of the chalkboard and effective class control
vii. Mastery of the
subject area was exhibited.
viii.
The
voice audibility was good.
ix. Varied methods
of teaching were used and the questions were well distributed.
x. Worksheets were
distributed to the pupils to do group work and exercises were given at the end
of the lessons.
Weaknesses
i. The lesson
lightly exceeded two periods of 70 minutes
ii. Some of the TLMs
were not sufficient for large class size of over seventy (70) pupils in a
class(e.g. JHS 1B of Buduburam D/A JHS “A&B”)
The Way Forward
The science
teachers in each circuit, except Nyanyano circuit,
agreed to meet thrice a term to share ideas on the challenging topics, either
through demonstration lesson, peer teaching or TLMs
preparation and usage. The Nyanyano circuit science
teachers agreed to meet twice a term.
Recommendation
Science INSET
& Project Fund should be established in each circuit. This should be
discussed at Headteachers’ meetings.

REPORTS ON INSPECTION OF SCHOOL
–BASED ASSESSMENT IN SELECTED JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS
08/01/14:
v Oguaakrom/Nyakuadze D/A JHS and Brofoyedur
–Mangoase D/A JHS were visited to inspect
School-Based Assessment CAT1,CAT2,CAT3 and CAT4 in Integrated Science.
The science
teacher at Oguaakrom /Nyakuadze
D/A JHS administered CAT 1, CAT 2 and CAT 3, except CAT 4 which he said was due
to sporting activities.
v At Brofoyedur/Mangoase D/A/JHS, the science teacher also administered CAT
1, CAT 2 and CAT 3 in all the three classes. He also administered CAT 4 in JHS
1and JHS2 except JHS 3, which said was due to the sporting activities.
09/01/14;
Three schools were visited to inspect
the SBA. The schools included Pomadze/Asebu D/A JHS, Chapess/Ossamedih D/A JHS and Nuaem D/A
JHS.
v At Pomadze/Asebu D/A JHS, the
science teacher administered CAT 1, CAT 2 and CAT 3 in all the three classes,
except CAT 4 that she could not administer and the reason was given to be the
sporting activities. She designed the SBA Form which all the teachers used to
record the pupils’ assessment scores in the first term.
v At Chapess/Ossamedih D/A JHS, the
science teacher also administered CAT 1, CAT 2 and CAT 3, except CAT 4, in all
the three classes. He gave sporting activities to be the reason for not
administering the CAT 4.
v At Nuaem D/A JHS, the science teacher was able to administer
CAT 1, CAT 2, CAT 3 and CAT 4 in all the three classes. He also made available
the SBA Forms to all teachers in the school which they used to record the
pupils’ assessment scores in the first term. For CAT 4, the project topics
which he gave to pupils, in each of the classes, included Biogas digester,
Osmosis and Diffusion and Electromagnetism respectively.
13/01/14:
Two
schools were visited. They were Otapirow D/A JHS and Darhom D/A JHS.
Ø The teachers at
the Otapirow D/A JHS confirmed that as soon as the
Science teacher returned from the One-day SBA workshop organized for Science
teachers, he also organized the teachers on the staff and took them through the
SBA. The New SBA Forms were designed and used to record the pupils’ assessment
scores in the first term.
The
Science teacher himself was able to administer the SBA CAT 1, CAT 2, CAT 3 and
CAT 4.
Ø At Darhom D/A JHS, the previous assessment forms, instead of
the New SBA forms, were used to record the pupils’ assessment scores in the
first term. The SBA CAT1, CAT 2, CAT 3 and CAT 4 were not administered. The
staff of teachers at the JHS was taken through the SBA by the District Science
Coordinator. The staff, however, promised to start administering the SBA CATs
this second term, and also to use the New SBA Form.
15/01/14:
OKyereko Methodist JHS and Mpota-Mampong-Adawukwaa
D/A JHS were also visited to inspect the SBA.
Ø At Okyereko Methodist JHS, neither the CATs were administered
nor the New SBA Forms were used to record the pupils’
assessment scores in the first term. The reason was given that the science
teacher did not attend the workshop organised for the
science teachers because they did not have substantive science teacher. A service personnel who had finished his service has being
contracted to teach the integrated science whenever he is free.
The
headmaster was briefly taken through the SBA and provided with the soft copy of
the SBA and other related documents by the District Science Coordinator. He,
however, promised to organise an INSET for the staff
on the SBA.
Ø At Mpota-Mampong-Adawukwaa D/A JHS, the Integrated Science
teacher administered the four CATs.
The
staff used SBA register to record the pupils’ assessment scores in the first
term.
Ø The Pomadze circuit supervisor, Madam Comfort Assah Amoaful, organised one-day workshop for all head teachers in the Pomadze circuit on SBA. The Science coordinator was invited
to take them through the SBA.
Recommendation:
Circuit Supervisors should ensure that
INSETs are organized in the various schools on SBA and its usage because the
science teachers in each of the Junior High Schools were taken through the
overview of the SBA and were requested to inform their Head teachers to organise INSET on SBA for other teachers in the schools.
They should also ensure that the teachers use the New SBA Forms to record the
assessment scores obtained by the pupils.

PRESENTATION
The
revision lessons were started on 2nd April, 2014 and ended on 3rd
June, 2014, though all the topics were not covered. Science teachers were
requested to continue the revision lessons with the pupils till BECE papers
were written. The schools visited include the following:
1.
Adabra Zion JHS
2.
Brofoyedur D/A JHS
3.
Kweikrom D/A JHS
4.
Manso No. 1 D/A JHS
5.
Oguaakrom /Nyakuadze D/A JHS
6.
Osamkrom D/A JHS
7.
Mpota D/A JHS
The
pupils were advised to form study groups and intensify revisions of topics in
various subject areas.
Photocopies
of the handouts of Integrated Science topics revised with the JHS three (3)
pupils have been attached to the report.
The
rate of absenteeism by JHS three (3) pupils was high, especially, pupils in Oguaakrom/Nyakuadze D/A JHS and Brofoyedur B/A JHS. However, the pupils were advised to be
serious and regular to school at this very crucial moment.
Recommendation:
Prior
to the registration of JHS three (3) pupils for BECE each year, they should be
made to sign a bond of good behaviour and attending school
regularly, especially, in schools where the rate of absenteeism of
pupils to school is high.

of schemes of work, lesson plans and School-Based Assessments (SBA), as well as
revision lessons in Integrated Science with JHS Form three (3) pupils, were
carried out in selected schools from January to April, 2015.
INSPECTION
OF SCHEMES OF WORK, LESSON PLANS AND SBA IN INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS
A
total of ten (10) schools were visited to inspect schemes of work, lesson plans
and SBA. Most of the Mathematics and Integrated Science teachers drew their
schemes of work and prepared their lesson plans up to date. However, few of the
teachers administered School Based Assessment Class Assessment Task five (SBA
CAT 5) at the time of the visit.
After
the inspection, one-on-one discussions were held with teachers on the scheme of
work, lesson plans and SBA. Pupils in JHS Form three (3) were given a brief
talk on how to go about their revision lessons.

RECOMMENDATION
1.
The
circuit supervisors need to, occasionally, organise
INSET on School-Based Assessment (SBA) for teachers in their respective
schools.
2.
Pupils
of Nkwantanan D/A Basic School, in Buduburam Circuit, urgently need tables and chairs because
they have to bring plastic hairs from home to school every day they come to
school.

INSPECTION OF
SCHEMES OF WORK, LESSON NOTES AND CLASS ASSESSMENT TASKS 9
Two schools were
visited to inspect schemes of work, lesson notes and class assessment tasks 9
in Integrated Science and Mathematics. The schools were Nyanyano
D/A JHS and New Nyanyano Kojo-Oku
D/A JHS.
The schemes of
work and the lesson notes were planned and prepared well and up-to-date.
However, the class assessment task 9 was not administered at the time of visit.
A brief meeting was convened with Integrated Science and Mathematics teachers
in each school to discuss planning and preparation of schemes of work and
lesson notes.
SUPERVISION OF 3RD
MOCK EXAMINATION IN INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS
During 3rd
Mock Examinations, visits were made to Brofoyedur D/A
JHS, Osamkrom D/A JHS and Brofoyedur/Mangoase D/A JHS to supervise the 3rd Mock
Examinations in Integrated Science and Mathematics. The examinations in each
school were started and ended on time devoid of examination malpractices.
RECOMMENDATION
During the visit
to New Nyanyano Kojo-Oku
D/A JHS, it was realised that only one teacher was
handling both Integrated Science and Mathematics in all the classes. It is
therefore recommended that an Integrated Science teacher or a Mathematics
teacher be posted to the school.
